Storage Expo is coming in mid-October and research conducted by the organisers reveals that virtualised technology is going to be high on the agenda of many attendees. A pre-exposition study of more than 400 IT professionals revealed that 95% of organisations have migrated (28%) - or are planning to migrate in the next 12 months (67%) - to a virtualised IT environment as a means of improving their disaster recovery options. And the same percentile again (95%) said that storage area networks already form (30%) - or will form in the next 12 months (65%) - part of their virtualised infrastructure.

One of the storage exposition and conference planned keynote speakers, John Abbot, founder and chief analyst with The 451 Group, said that the most significant change that virtualisation brings to the mix is the isolation of workloads from the underlying hardware. This translates, he says, to enhanced flexibility and the removal of the need to implement and maintain a single, uniform platform, resulting in significantly reduced costs, due to lower redundancy and higher utilisation.
According to Mr Abbott, whilst the added complexity at the planning stage of virtualisation can act as a barrier to new business, "once users gain more confidence in the emerging set of new tools, then sales will accelerate. When properly implemented, virtual infrastructures can form the basis of automated backup, retention, business-continuance and disaster-recovery processes." Careful planning, however, he said, is required to achieve the best value for money. "For instance, many secondary applications could get by with the 'good enough' capabilities of VMware High Availability," he explained.

Accessible Archives, Inc. ©, a publisher of electronic full-text searchable historical databases, has announced the continuing expansion of its existing database, The Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective, with the addition of a fourth part. The enhanced database is being renamed simply The Civil War. The new part consists of several newspapers supplied by Vincennes University, Vincennes, Indiana, a comprehensive two-year college located in Southwestern Indiana offering a diverse set of majors.

The Civil War: A Midwestern Perspective. This collection consists of seven newspapers published in Indiana between 1855 and 1869. Thus, it provides pre-and post-Civil War information in addition to coverage of the war itself. Ownership varied between Democrats, Republicans and the Know-Nothings.

Vincennes Gazette (1855-1869)
The Vincennes Times (1865-1866)
Vincennes Western Sun (1856-1869)
Stars & Stripes (1862: 2 issues)
Vincennes Courant (1855-1856)
The Old Post Union (1862: 5 months worth) (became the Vincennes Times)
News of the Day (1855-1857)

This cooperative venture between Vincennes University and Accessible Archives ©, was coordinated by Unlimited Priorities Corporation, a company specializing in support for organizations within the information industry, acting in a consultative capacity. Vincennes University initially approached Unlimited Priorities with questions about a potential digitization project. A review of the archival materials convinced Unlimited Priorities that a potential existed for a commercial product They, in turn, contacted Accessible Archives, a current client, who agreed to perform the conversion in return for commercial rights. The University packed and shipped the volumes to Accessible Archives© who then arranged for their addition to the collection.

Richard L. King, Reference Librarian, Shake and Lewis Libraries, Vincennes University, discussed the project: “We are very happy to make these 19th Century resources available to a larger audience, not only to students and faculty at Vincennes University and area high school history classes, but to all Accessible Archives users. Several of these newspapers have never been microfilmed, therefore making online access to them as a result of this digitization project even more significant.”

Tom Nagy, Accessible Archives© COO, responded, “We’re excited to add this fourth component to our Civil War collection since it provides information about Civil War activities in the Midwest that have not received a lot of attention previously. There is some pretty amazing content here.”

Iris Hanney, President of Unlimited Priorities, added, ”We like to think that we perform an important function for the scholarly community when we can bring together two parties that can be served while helping the greater good. We expect to see more of this type of cooperative effort in other areas during the coming year.”

OBITUARY: Pamela Baker

Those of our readers who were involved with the industry during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s will be sad to hear of the death of Pamela Baker in Mallorca on September 24th.

Pamela was a partner in G G Baker & Associates from its inception in 1968. Much of her work was in a supporting capacity, preparing page layouts for publication, handling sales and invoicing and conducting research. She will be better known for her more public activity as Honorary Secretary of the Microfilm Association of Great Britain for which she handled subscriptions, organised seminars, distributed their quarterly magazine Microdoc and maintained records of meetings on a voluntary basis for many years.

Pamela also assisted the International Micrographic Congress and distributed its journal in the UK. She was made a Fellow of the IMC in September 1976 in recognition of her services to micrographics.

Pamela was working on projects for the industry to within a month of her death, assisting her husband, Gerald Baker, with the update of the IDMi Directory and the preparation of a new website for G G Baker & Associates.

She moved to Mallorca in 1986 and soon became involved in work for charity, over the ensuing years she served on the Chaplaincy Council of the Anglican Church in Palma and was also the sole representative for Save the Children Fund in Mallorca. She applied the skills she had acquired in organising low cost seminars for MAGB to her charity work and held many successful dinners for which she would negotiate a discounted price with a leading restaurant and then obtain a dozen or more donations of valuable raffle prizes – such as a weekend at the best hotel on the island. Needless to say these events were very popular and she raised many thousands of pounds for Save the Children. She also organised the distribution of the SCF Christmas Catalogue throughout the island and the subsequent importation and distribution of items ordered from it. Needless to say, she talked a removal company into transporting these goods to the island without charge!

Pam wrote two books under her maiden name of Pamela Legge. She had considerable success with “Enjoying Mallorca” which outsold the other revenues of G G Baker & Associates for two years. She leaves two daughters, one of whom, Claire Baker, will take over her partnership at G G Baker & Associates.

OBITUARY: Tim Nixon (1944 - 2009) [Excerpt from Issue 58]
Former Green Sheet Editor, Tim Nixon, passed away in the company of his family on Friday morning the 18th of September, and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of his family, his former colleagues, and everyone around the world who knew him.

Tim was diagnosed as having cancer in April 2009, just over a year after taking early retirement from the editorship of the magazine, and after it changed to IDMi. Despite a valiant fight, it was simply too much for him.

The last time I spoke face to face with Tim was on the day he officially handed over full control of the magazine to me, in February last year. The opportunity to take early retirement was an enticing one for Tim, and he enthused to me about the work he intended doing for local community magazines and companies. He also spoke of his proposed quest to take up photography as a serious hobby, and also as Tim put it, ' .... deal with a long list of chores Carole has for me.' * I hope Tim achieved some, if not all of those commendable tasks, before being taken from us.*
Tim's association with the magazine began in 1986, when John Negus of the UK's Microfilm Shop, was looking to provide a magazine for microfilm users, which would also act as a catalyst for news, views and comment. The Micrographics Marketplace was therefore born, and Tim set about the task of editing, and along the way made many contacts and friends, first through the microfilm, and later the document management industry.

Through the 90's the landscape of the industry changed, and in 2002 the title merged with Mitch Badler's own US based publication, Micrographics Newsletter. Originally printed on green paper, the nickname Green Sheet stuck, and Tim was pleased to be continue as editor when the titles merged as the Green Sheet magazine.*
Extending his remit to cover industry contacts around the world, the coverage and depth of the magazine continued to grow.* Tim and I worked together from late 2006 until last February, and although our views often crossed when it came to the magazine content and layout, we always remained friends and gave way to one another to get the job done. * Socially, Tim was great fun and liked his 'pint'. He often regaled us with funny industry stories and jokes of a more 'general' humour.

Tim: You will be missed by many.

e-Image Data debuted the beta version of its new WORD-Search technology at the American Library Association convention in Chicago in July. A new function for the popular ScanPro 2000, WORD-Search allows users to find selected words on any type of microform.

WORD-Search is the first software of its type to be developed for searching topics within microfilm documents. The ScanPro 2000 first scans the microfilm image viewed on the screen then analyzes the scan for word matches.

“The user enters the key words for the microfilm image of interest and clicks the WORD-Search button,” says James Westoby, president, e-Image Data. “The software then highlights any matches for the specified words, similar to the way Microsoft Word’s “find” function does for Word documents.” The final result is the complete microfilm image on the viewing screen displaying the word matches.

“The ScanPro 2000 is widely used by libraries and researchers across the world and WORD-Search was developed as a response to customer feedback,” says Westoby. “Our customers can now easily search and locate birth, obituary, and marriage records as well as newspaper articles stored on microfilm.”

Millions of valuable documents, including rare source materials and government documents stored on microfilm, exist in libraries throughout the world. Librarians who tried the beta version of WORD-Search at the ALA show were excited about the possibilities.

“The university librarians that we talked with at ALA were very enthusiastic about WORD-Search,” says Westoby. “Students could use the WORD-Search function for their research and would no longer have to read the entire page to find relevant entries. It will reduce enormously the amount of time they need to spend going through microfilm documents and also free up the machines for other users.”

WORD-Search also has the potential to be used by educators and libraries to locate and select content on microfilm to be made available online. “This software could revolutionize the way microfilm is used for research”, says Westoby. “It will open the door for a whole new level of accessibility and information sharing.”

E-Image Data received excellent feedback on the beta version of the software from the ALA attendees and we are refining its features in anticipation of a product launch before the end of the year. WORD-Search works with any ScanPro 2000 and pre-launch orders will be accepted beginning November 23.

“With ibml’s in-line global language solution as part of their document scanning infrastructure, global customers will rapidly transition from manual data capture practices to unprecedented document automation that will enable them to reduce cost and better leverage business information,” said NovoDynamics President David Rock. “This represents an evolution in document imaging.”

Image Access from Wuppertal, Germany presents the first wide format duplex scanner at the DMS Expo in Cologne. The WideTEK 36 DS is the world’s first wide format scanner for duplex digitalization of newspapers and other double-sided printed documents. The very compact WideTEK 36 DS needs only four seconds to scan the front and back sides of a newspaper page (at 200 dpi). This scanner offers considerable advantages to press clipping services, libraries and archives who, until now, had no choice but to use complicated multiple step solutions to digitalize newspapers.

WT36-USBThe large format duplex scanner WideTEK 36 DS scans documents up to 36 inches (915 mm) in width. The idea of double-sided scanning in one production step primarily means less production effort: The document no longer needs to be flipped over and scanned again on the other side. The scanners feature two camera boxes, both consisting of three CCD systems, integrated into upper and lower part of the device – only few centimetres from each other. The WideTEK 36 DS captures both sides of the newspaper at the same time. As a final step, the software separates the scanned document into four single images, capturing the left and right sides on the front and back of the newspaper – everything in one step.

The entire scan process – from scanning, image processing up to image display – can therefore be considerably reduced. This is especially important for press clipping, in order to deliver the actual press analysis even earlier/faster.
