ABBYY®, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic software, today announced that it is expanding its offering for enterprise search systems with the new ABBYY Recognition Server IFilter solution. Integrated with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) or Windows Search, it unlocks image files such as TIFF, JPEG, DjVu, and PDF for full-text content indexing and therefore enables faster and more complete search of all documents in a corporate network. As a result, corporate users have a reliable tool to easily sort through volumes of image files accumulated in their organisation.

“Enterprise search systems give corporate users quick access to information contained in a variety of documents necessary to perform everyday tasks. A document that cannot be quickly retrieved is usually considered to be lost even if, nominally, it still exists somewhere in the archives. But some documents are stored in formats that are not convenient for search and retrieval, such as image formats,” commented Andrey Isaev, director of Technology Products Department at ABBYY. “Our product, designed to enhance Microsoft systems with the image content search support, provides an easy solution to simplify access to corporate information and knowledge, and increase work efficiency in an organisation.”

PCI DSS Compliance is certainly going to be top of mind for retailers in the coming months. On Thursday July 1st Visa is tightening up its security rules on smaller companies accepting card payments; this is particularly pertinent as it was announced earlier this month that all London Olympics tickets must be purchased on a Visa card! In September, a further security mandate will require large scale card-accepting businesses to be fully PCI DSS compliant from the start of that month onwards.

What is needed, according to Jeff LoSapio, security practice manager for application security specialists Fortify, is a change of mindset at the SME end of the market: “Smaller companies accepting card payments need to start thinking like larger scale companies. With cyber threats at an all time high they are increasingly a target and need to take PCI seriously.”

This month Fujitsu is celebrating its 75 year anniversary – a milestone very few other global IT companies have reached. Fujitsu, which is today the largest Japanese employer in the UK and Ireland (11,500 employees), has been a fundamental part of some of the IT industry's most notable breakthroughs and innovations – from the early days of telephone switching in the 1930s; the mainframe and parallel computing generation of the 1970s, to more recent inventions such as palm vein authentication and the world's first 3D PC.

Today Fujitsu is a £2 billion revenue company in the UK and Ireland; managing over 1 million desktops across government departments and private organisations; was the first company in Europe to have a Tier III certified data centre, and recently won the UK's largest desktop and thin client outsource deal with the Department for Work and Pensions. Globally the company is ranked by Gartner as the worlds third largest IT services provider based on total revenue*; employs 170,000 people worldwide; is present in 70 countries, and reported revenues of 4.6 trillion yen ($50bn) in the financial year ending 31 March 2010.

Verity Systems, leading manufacturer of degaussers and bulk tape erasers, today announced that their hard drive degausser, the SDD Master has been tested and approved by the National Security Agency (NSA) to sanitize classified information from magnetic storage media, and now features on the NSA’s Evaluated Products List for Degaussers.

The National Security Agency (NSA) has set out a policy for the disposal of magnetic storage devices such as hard drives. It is this standard that all US government agencies must adhere to and is recognised as the most effective and fool-proof way of disposing of hard drives effectively and securely. Security professionals need a guarantee that their data is completely erased and the SDD Master degausser delivers.

The SDD Master is simple and safe to operate. Lift the perspex lid, insert the hard drive, close the lid and press START. The entire cycle takes approximately 60 seconds. Data becomes permanently unrecoverable once exposed to the powerful gauss force in the device. The SDD-Master delivers a minimum magnetic field of 17,750 gauss, three times to the media throughout the automatic operation. This ensures that the SDD Master remains unrivalled by any other degausser on the market.

At the recent Interop Tokyo event, Napatech successfully demonstrated that a standard server with 8 CPU cores can be used to build a full throughput 10 Gbps Intrusion Prevention System (IPS). Napatech has shown with this breakthrough that high-performance IPS products can be built using off-the-shelf components at lower cost, with less risk and faster time-to-market. More significantly, this demonstration shows that throughput performance can be scaled with the number of available CPU cores leading to even higher throughput possibilities.

“With Napatech network adapters, we can take full advantage of available CPU cores, which allows the solution to scale”, according to Erik Norup, President, Napatech Inc. “We can support up to 32 CPU cores, so throughput performance can be increased even higher, if more CPU cores are available. This provides predictable scalability in performance.”

Aia Software, a leading author and developer of intelligent document composition software today announced that its ITP Document Platform will facilitate anytime and anywhere document creation through integration with Office 2010. Microsoft Office Web Apps, the online equivalent of the Office applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, gives users online access to documents created in ITP.

Users can view, share and edit documents on a desktop PC, a mobile device or online. This makes interactive correspondence management with ITP wholly independent of the kind of browser that is used, with the integrated approach offering unrivalled ease of use. This new development lays the foundation for the future deployment of ITP in the Cloud through Microsoft BPOS and Azure.

ITP allows business users to develop and manage the content of their own documents themselves, without the intervention of the IT department. As a result, documents can be edited quicker and more efficiently. Integration with Microsoft Office is one of ITP’s strengths. ITP can generate correspondence based on templates and text boxes from Microsoft Word, or generate documents in Word, so that the user can further edit these documents. Recording templates, text boxes and input fields makes it possible to guarantee the quality and consistency of customer communication. It also yields cost savings as employees will no longer have to repeatedly draft the same letters, emails, proposals or contracts manually.

AVAST Software, developer of the award-winning avast! antivirus, released a report today proving wrong the general
"feeling" that it is the 'dodgy' and 'adult‘ sites that are virus infected. "We are not recommending people to start searching for erotic content, not at all" says CTO Ondrej Vlcek "but the statistics are clear - for every infected adult
domain we identify there are 99 others with perfectly legitimate content that are also infected".
In the UK for example, we see every day more infected domains containing the word "London" (such as the blog section of http://kensington-london-hotels.co.uk/) than any other domain containing the word "sex". The latest discovery of an infected site is the Vodafone UK website. This infection in the smart phones section shows how advanced the bad guys are at finding ways to deliver the malware to the internet users.

Intel's new Anti-Theft (AT) technology for computers, which allows for companies to give a remote command to a laptop PC to disable access to the computer's operating system or, where appropriate, disabling the encryption key system, has been given a big welcome by Origin Storage.

"The points raised by Duncan Mee, the director of WinMagic over the weekend, in a podcast with security analyst Ben Chai in which he explains that the Intel AT technology can auto-disable the laptop if it does not `call home' every 30 days, is a very powerful feature," said Andy Cordial, managing director with the storage systems integration specialist.

"What this means is that laptops will start to cease to be such an attractive target for thieves, who will effectively be left with a high-tech doorstop on their hands when the AT system is triggered, either remotely, or the laptop fails to call home within the required period," he added.

Half of organisations have said that what excites them most about the cloud aside from the acknowledged business benefits of cost saving and increased agility is that resources can be reassigned to focus more on creativity and growth rather than fire drills according to a poll by 360°IT - The IT Infrastructure Event, due to take place at London's Earls Court this coming September. A further 30% said that it was the ability to use familiar apps they used outside work in a work environment, and 14% thought that they would gain competitive advantage over non could adopters. Only 9% were too worried about security risks to get excited by the cloud. [Poll of 509 IT managers carried out in June 2010]
Peter Hinssen A leading lecturer and technology trends expert who blogs for 360°IT says that, far from being wary of cloud computing, businesses should actively embrace its benefits and accelerate the rate of adoption that the Internet-based computing and storage environment brings to firms of all sizes.

As threats to corporate data grow, and the cost of breaches increase, a survey of alleged security conscious professionals has remarkably revealed that over half of respondents (52%), who admit to carrying company data on a USB stick, do not encrypt it. Remarkably, 11% of this savvy audience, who really should know better, ‘protect’ their devices with passwords alone – an insufficient defence that is widely understood to be easily breached!
The study, sponsored by Credant Technologies – the market leader in endpoint data protection solutions, questioned 277 IT security professionals who, theoretically, view security seriously enough to spend time attending InfoSecurity Europe. Astonishingly, the type of unprotected data being carried would have serious repercussions to the organisation should it be misplaced – from intellectual property(67%), customer data (40%) and employee details (26%).

This summer, consumers will continue to scour the web to keep up with their interests and news. While surfing the Internet is statistically safer than, say surfing in Newquay, it is not a risk free activity. Around 85 percent of new computer infections are contracted via the internet; largely through the 396,679 hijacked and malicious webpages which avast! identified in May.
Landing on an infected site is as simple as just looking for something … NHS, roofing supplies, fireworks. To keep computer users across the UK protected during the hectic summer, AVAST Software, providers of the avast! antivirus program, has released the first of its “UK’s Most Infected” list of the most infected websites, alerting consumers to beware of the month’s infected websites as well as trends and site genres to approach with caution.
avast! virus labs uncovered an overwhelming small business theme during May for the most infected types of websites. Websites set up by small businesses to promote goods and services were prominent on the list as well as “fake” sites for well known UK organisations such as nhs.uk and blueyonder.co.uk have been infecting users’ computers with malware and other viruses.

ARX (Algorithmic Research)
, a leading provider of digital signature solutions, has deployed CoSign® digital signatures at Novozymes, a leading bio-innovation organization based in Denmark. CoSign is being used within Novozymes’ Microsoft® SharePoint®-based Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) for signing electronic scientific notes, reports, studies and more.
In order to minimize disruption to their existing processes and procedures, Novozymes chose to develop their own, custom-built ELN solution. By taking their lab processes digital, Novozymes saves the time it takes for teams of scientists to assemble and authorize paper-based documentation. Through the ELN, documents proving scientific discovery and product inventions (which are later used in patent applications) are approved and trusted via standard digital signatures, and made electronically available to an unlimited number of researchers from remote locations, for years into the future. The potential benefits of enhanced collaboration and document control influenced Novozymes’ decision to base their ELN solution on a SharePoint foundation, a document management platform which they were already using for various other business processes. The addition of digital signatures to the ELN makes the entire solution electronic through-out.

Research from a global survey by BridgeHead Software, the Healthcare Storage Virtualization (HSV) company, has revealed that secure data management is the healthcare industry's most pressing issue as hospitals transition from paper-based health records to electronic systems.
The Data Management Healthcheck 2010, a global survey into hospitals' ongoing strategies for managing their IT systems, found that the top IT spending priority for 2010 was disaster recovery (44 per cent), closely followed by Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS, 38 per cent) and digitising paper records (35 per cent).
John McCann, Director of Marketing at BridgeHead Software, said, "The healthcare industry's data environment is notoriously complex, with most hospitals navigating a variety of systems from a range of vendors for managing different types of clinical data in different locations, both on and off hospital premises. When healthcare information systems go down, bringing that information back online is an intricate process. Healthcare IT professionals need to know which applications and data have to be reinstated, and in which order. Given this complexity, it is not surprising that disaster recovery is the top IT investment priority in healthcare today."

Financial sector organisations can save up to 25% of their IT budgets by retiring legacy systems and applications, while maintaining easy, company-wide access to legacy data, according to specialist software developer NSC Group.
The company says that financial organisations typically have dozens, or even hundreds, of legacy applications such as pensions and investment management platforms that are rarely, if ever used. Yet these are kept operational at considerable expense, simply to maintain access to the legacy data they hold for legal, taxation or due diligence requirements.
However, with NSC Group’s data access tool, DataNovata, organisations can develop new, open applications that enable any user to easily access legacy data that has been migrated from these obsolete systems. This allows the legacy systems to be decommissioned, saving on maintenance, support and licensing costs.

While our MPs are promising more transparency and honesty in politics perhaps the IT industry should follow suit. According to a survey, conducted by Tufin Technologies, of 242 IT professionals mainly from organisations employing 1000 to 5000+ employees, 1 in 10 admitted that either they or a colleague have cheated to get an IT audit passed. However it isn’t all bad news; compared to a similar survey conducted in 2009 the number of people admitting to cheating has halved in number.
Amongst those who have cheated lack of time and resources are cited as the main reasons, underlining the ever increasing pressure on today’s IT departments. With 25% responding that firewall audits take a week to conduct attempting to avoid this painful process is understandable if not excusable.
What’s more 30% of respondents only audit their firewalls once every 5 years and even more worrying 7% never even conduct an audit. With this in mind it’s less surprising to find out that 36% of IT professionals admit their firewall rule bases are a mess increasing their susceptibility to hackers, network crashes and compliance violations.

24 months since the publication of the Poynter Report which was commissioned after the HMRC breach, and almost three years since the original misplaced discs came to light, and a similar breach could occur again. In a survey released today by Cyber-Ark, the leading global software provider for protecting critical information, applications and identities, has discovered that 19% of companies are still using couriers to send large or sensitive files, the insecure transfer method utilised originally by HMRC which left a disc containing child benefit information missing in London! The survey was carried out amongst 238 IT security professionals at Infosecurity Europe (London) in April.
The survey showed that some of the lessons had been heeded, with 82% of companies now having systems in place to allow them to transfer data. A further positive conversion is the decline in the use of email, from 35% in 2008 to just 16%, and a considerable increase in the adoption of secure email, up at 42%. However, it’s not all good news as a worrying 67% have now adopted File Transfer Protocol (FTP) as their preferred method to transfer sensitive data with a risky 28% trusting web based services.

Reports that Google are planning to drop the Microsoft operating system for security reasons following targeted attacks they've been suffering may lead other enterprises to follow this practice. Adopting this practice by enterprises will not improve their defences against targeted attacks, according to Trusteer the leading provider of secure browsing services.
“Enterprises that are considering shifting to an operating system like Mac or Linux should realize that although there are less malware programs available against these platforms, the shift will not solve the targeted attacks problem and may even make it worse," said Mickey Boodaei, Trusteer's CEO.

As the IT industry digests the Chancellor of the Exchequer's plans to shave £6.25 billion from the expenditure spreadsheets of various government departments, a leading IT expert from the 360°IT Blog has warned that if IT is to maximise its potential to stave off the potentially devastating effects of the cuts, the sector needs the most resilient, persuasive, creative and revolutionary IT leaders the profession has ever seen.
According to Jim Mortleman, a leading IT industry commentator, there will be massive repercussions for IT in the sector as budget reductions are ramped up. While George Osborne's cut-backs include £95 million of IT savings, the pain doesn't stop there, as the Government has also mandated £1.15 billion in 'discretionary areas' such as consultancy and a further £1.7 billion through the scrapping or renegotiation of existing contracts. "Since IT is a big user of consultancy services and a big contributor to overall spending on third-party suppliers, it is likely to have to swallow a fair chunk of these cuts too," he said in his blog on the 360°IT Event website.
